The tulip is a symbol the Netherlands and Turkey have shared for four centuries, and this Dutch 5 euro coin of 2012 uses it to mark 400 years of trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries, which began in 1612.
The obverse shows Queen Beatrix with a tulip in full bloom as the national symbol of the Netherlands, surrounded by BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN. The reverse pairs a closed tulip with the waxing crescent and star of the Turkish flag, the date 2012, the value 5 € and the legend NEDERLAND TURKIJE 400 JAAR (Netherlands Turkey 400 years). The edge is plain with the inscription GOD ★ ZIJ ★ MET ★ ONS (God be with us).
Both sides were designed by Deniz Seyda Tunca. The coin went on sale on 27 March 2012. The issue came in several versions; this is the mass-produced one in silver-plated copper, in UNC quality. The silver proof and a 10 euro gold coin on the same theme are separate collector versions.
For a collection it is a coin whose design rests on a symbol shared by two countries: the tulip links Dutch and Turkish tradition, while the crescent and star make the coin instantly recognisable in a thematic set on diplomacy and international ties.
UNC condition means the coin never circulated: there is no wear and the original surface lustre is preserved.
